Apuntes para un estudio del comercio y los comerciantes en el Perú y Nueva España en el siglo XVIII (1701-1761)

Resumen

El presente artículo analiza la situación del comercio americano y las estrategias comerciales que pusieron en práctica los comerciantes dentro de los contextos peruano y novohispano durante el  periodo anterior a los reformas de Carlos III. El autor centra su interés en dos aspectos principales que causaron no pocas ambigüedades y controversias entre los propios comerciantes: el  sistema de flotas y las perturbaciones que resultaron del contrabando. Ambos hechos afectaron de  una u otra manera a los comerciantes pero no hasta el punto de hundir la eco­nomía de esta  colectividad. Asimismo se ve cómo, dentro de este panorama, elaboran una serie de estrategias para desarrollar sus negocios, lo cual hace pre­guntarse al autor hasta qué punto afectó a los comerciantes la crisis que supues­tamente padecieron durante la primera mitad del siglo XVIII.

Notes for the Study of Commerce and Merchants in Peru and New Spain during the 18th Century (1701-1761)

The present article analyzes the situation of American trade and the commercial strategies of merchants within the Peruvian and Novahispanic contexts, during the period prior to Carlos III's reforms. The author focuses his attention on twon main aspects, which caused not a few ambiguities and controversies among the traders themselves: the fleet system and the resulting problems of contraband. Both of these facts necessarily affected traders, but not to the extent of ruining the group's economy. Also, it will be seen that the merchants constructed a series of strategies for the development of business. This leads the author to question to what pointthe supposed crisis of the first half of the 18th century affected these businessmen.
