Abstract
, “The mother of all evils”. Famine, drought, and other episodes of vulnerability in the Indian villages of San Juan de los Llanos, 1785-1800
This paper studies the impact of droughts and frosts on the Indian villages of San Juan de los Llanos during the decline of the Bourbon regime in New Spain. Based on the study of a documentary corpus of the period, I propose to explain the impact of climatic oscillations on two specific groups: Indian laborers and landowners. From their intricate relationship, this article exposes the main events related to the subsistence crisis in the eastern of Puebla until the beginning of the nineteenth century. In addition to the above, this paper introduces the concept of vulnerability to demonstrate that the human component, its historical circumstances and climate oscillations have an intimate relationship.
